AI Overviews on Branded Searches: How to Protect Clicks | Incisive Growth

Why Is Google Showing an AI Overview When People Search My Brand Name? Here’s How to Take Control

Your brand name used to be the safest search result you owned. By the end of September 2026, Google was putting an AI-written summary above it on the large majority of branded queries. Here’s what that means and what to do before it costs you clicks.

Search your own company name on Google right now. There’s a good chance the first thing you see isn’t your homepage. It’s an AI Overview: a paragraph Google wrote about you, pulled from sources you may or may not control.

For most brands, that’s new. And it matters more than it looks, because branded search is usually the highest-converting, cheapest traffic you have. These are people who already know your name and want to find you. If an AI summary now sits between them and your site, you need to know what it says and whether it’s still sending them through.

What Changed in Late September?

According to Search Engine Land, which reported on data from DemandSphere, AI Overviews on branded queries jumped sharply in the last days of September 2026. DemandSphere tracked branded keywords daily across markets and devices. For most of the month, AI Overview presence on those queries sat somewhere around 26 to 35%. Then it climbed fast, passing 80% by month end.

The peak was 90.48% on September 27. It held at 80.23% on September 28 and 82.06% on September 29. DemandSphere counted an AI Overview as present whenever one showed up, whether or not the brand itself was cited in it. Google hadn’t announced anything to explain the shift when the data was published.

A separate test backs this up. Chris Long of Nectiv checked 100 enterprise brands and found AI Overviews for 93 of them, including Reddit, Salesforce, Mailchimp and Facebook. Long flagged that this could cut click-through rates on branded searches. But neither his test nor DemandSphere’s tracking measured clicks, so the actual CTR impact is still an open question.

So here’s the honest picture. AI Overviews on branded searches went from a minority case to the default in a matter of days. Nobody knows yet exactly how much traffic it costs. That uncertainty is exactly why you should start measuring now, not after the numbers land.

Why This Matters for Your Brand

Branded search has always been the part of SEO you didn’t have to think about much. You rank first for your own name, maybe run a cheap brand campaign to block competitors, and move on.

An AI Overview changes that in three ways. First, Google is now summarising you in its own words, and it pulls from whatever it considers credible: your site, review platforms, Reddit threads, news coverage, old directory listings. If those sources are thin, outdated or negative, the summary will be too.

Second, it can answer the searcher’s question without a click. Someone typing “yourbrand pricing” might get a number from the overview and never visit your pricing page. That might be fine. It might also be a two-year-old price.

Third, it pushes your organic result and your brand ad further down the page. On mobile, that can mean below the fold.

How to Control What It Says

You can’t edit an AI Overview directly. You can influence what it’s built from. Here’s the process we’d run for any brand this week.

Audit your brand plus modifiers

Don’t just search your bare brand name. Search the variations real people type: “brand reviews”, “brand pricing”, “brand login”, “brand vs competitor”, “is brand legit”, “brand alternatives”, “brand cancel subscription”. Do it on desktop and mobile, logged out.

For each one, screenshot the AI Overview and write down three things: what it claims, which sources it cites, and whether anything is wrong, outdated or unflattering. A simple spreadsheet works. This becomes your baseline.

Fix the pages Google pulls from

Your own site is the source you control completely, so start there. Your about page, pricing page and FAQ page should answer the obvious brand questions in plain, quotable sentences. What do you do, who is it for, what does it cost, where are you based, how do people contact support.

If your pricing page says “contact us for a quote” and nothing else, don’t be surprised when the overview fills the gap with a number from a third-party blog. Give Google a clear, current answer to lift. This is where solid content optimization pays off: clear headings, direct answers near the top, and no burying the facts under marketing copy.

Clean up third-party profiles

Next, look at the external sources the overview cited in your audit. Typical ones are review sites, software directories, Google Business Profile, Crunchbase, LinkedIn, and Wikipedia or Wikidata for larger brands. Update anything stale: old pricing, former executives, discontinued products, wrong locations.

Reddit deserves its own line. If a Reddit thread about your brand keeps getting cited, read it properly. You can’t delete criticism, but you can respond transparently from an official account, and you can fix the underlying issue people are complaining about.

Make your entity crystal clear

Google needs to be confident about who you are. Use Organization structured data on your homepage with your official name, logo, URL and sameAs links to your verified profiles. Keep your name, description and contact details consistent everywhere. If you share a name with another company, consistency matters even more. Our on-page SEO services cover schema and entity signals if you want a second pair of eyes.

Set a monitoring cadence

AI Overviews change. Run your branded modifier checks weekly for the next month while this rollout settles, then monthly. Re-check immediately after a product launch, a price change, a PR issue or a rebrand. Those are the moments outdated information does the most damage.

How to Protect Branded Clicks

Watch branded CTR in Search Console

Filter Search Console performance data to queries containing your brand name. Compare clicks, impressions and CTR for the weeks before and after late September. Impressions should stay steady. If CTR drops while position doesn’t move, that’s your signal the overview is absorbing clicks.

Check your brand campaign metrics

In Google Ads, watch your brand campaign’s impression share, top-of-page rate, CTR and average CPC. If organic branded clicks soften and paid brand clicks rise, the brand campaign may be doing more work than it used to.

Decide whether to keep bidding on brand

This is a debate every brand has every year. Our view: right now is not the time to switch brand campaigns off. With an AI Overview pushing organic results lower, a brand ad is one of the few placements near the top that you fully control. Run a proper holdout test later, once the SERP stabilises, rather than cutting spend while the layout is shifting. If you need help structuring that test, our Google Ads management team runs these regularly.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Only checking your bare brand name

The bare name usually gets a fairly neutral summary. The damage tends to sit in modifier searches like “reviews”, “scam” or “vs competitor”. That’s where buyers are deciding, and where outdated or negative sources show up.

Arguing with the overview instead of fixing sources

Sending feedback through Google’s thumbs-down button is fine, but it isn’t a strategy. The overview reflects what’s published about you. Change the sources and the summary tends to follow.

Cutting brand spend on autopilot

Some teams see branded organic CTR dip and assume the fix is to spend less. Often the opposite holds while the layout is changing. Make paid brand decisions from data, not from a hunch.

Assuming the numbers will settle back

Maybe they will. But betting your best traffic source on Google reversing course isn’t a plan. Treat high AI Overview coverage on branded queries as the new normal until proven otherwise.

What This Means Going Forward

Brand search has quietly become an AEO problem. Your name now triggers an AI answer, and that answer is only as good as the information available about you across the web.

The brands that come out of this well will be the ones that treat their brand SERP like a landing page: audited, maintained and measured. Get your baseline this week, fix the obvious source issues, and start tracking branded CTR so you have real numbers when the industry is still guessing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is Google showing an AI Overview when people search my brand name?

Google sharply expanded AI Overviews on branded queries in late September 2026. DemandSphere data reported by Search Engine Land showed presence jumping from roughly 26 to 35% to over 80% within days. Google has not explained the change, so treat it as the new default and make sure the sources it summarises about you are accurate.

How do I change what Google AI Overview says about my company?

You can’t edit it directly, but you can change what it draws from. Update your about, pricing and FAQ pages with clear, current answers. Refresh third-party profiles, review sites and directories, add Organization structured data, and address recurring complaints in places like Reddit. Then recheck your branded searches every week to see what changed.

Will AI Overviews on branded queries reduce my clicks?

Possibly, but nobody has measured it yet. Chris Long of Nectiv warned branded CTR could fall, while noting that neither his test nor DemandSphere’s tracking looked at clicks. The practical move is to compare branded CTR in Search Console before and after late September 2026, so you have your own numbers instead of relying on guesses.

Should I still bid on my brand name in Google Ads?

For most brands, yes, at least for now. An AI Overview pushes organic results down the page, and a brand ad is one of the few top placements you fully control. Keep the campaign running, watch impression share and CPC, and plan a proper holdout test once the search results page settles down.

What should I do if the AI Overview shows outdated or negative information?

Find the source it cites first. If it’s your own page, update it. If it’s a directory or review site, correct your profile or respond publicly. If it’s a Reddit thread or article, fix the underlying issue and publish a clear, current answer on your site. You can also send feedback to Google directly from the overview itself.

How often should I monitor my brand SERP?

Weekly for the next month while this rollout settles, then monthly after that. Check your bare brand name plus modifiers like reviews, pricing, login and competitor comparisons, on both desktop and mobile. Recheck immediately after launches, price changes or any press coverage, since those are the moments stale information hurts you the most.
