What Is the New Google Search Console AI Report, and How Do You Actually Use It?
Google rolled out its generative AI performance reports in Search Console to all websites worldwide on August 31, 2026. For the first time, you can see exactly where your pages are appearing in AI Overviews, AI Mode, and Discover’s generative features. Here is what the data actually tells you and how to use it.
Until August 31, most website owners had no visibility into how their content was performing inside Google’s AI-generated search experiences. You could see organic clicks and impressions in the standard Search Console performance report, but whether your pages were being cited in AI Overviews or surfaced in AI Mode responses was invisible. That changed when Google completed the global rollout of its generative AI performance reports.
This is genuinely useful data, but it is easy to misread if you do not understand what the metrics mean and, more importantly, what they do not yet measure. Here is a complete walkthrough of the report, what to prioritise, and how to turn the data into an actionable SEO strategy.
What the Report Shows
The generative AI performance report in Search Console covers impressions generated by three different Google AI experiences: AI Overviews in traditional search results, AI Mode responses, and generative AI features in Discover. Each of these surfaces can generate an impression for your page when Google’s system either cites your content in a generated response or shows it as a supporting source link.
An impression in this context means your page was shown as a source or citation within an AI-generated response. It does not necessarily mean a user clicked through to your site. This is an important distinction that we will return to when discussing the report’s limitations.
The data is broken down by page, country, and date, following the same structure as the standard Search Performance report. This means you can identify which specific pages on your site are being cited in AI responses, in which markets, and how that impression volume has changed over time. According to Search Engine Journal and the Google Search Central Blog, the report also includes data on where your Search generative AI controls are active, though this feature has a more limited rollout than the impression data itself.
AI Overviews vs AI Mode Data
The report distinguishes between AI Overviews impressions and AI Mode impressions, and it is worth understanding why these two numbers tell you different things about your content’s performance in AI search.
AI Overviews appear in traditional Google search results. When a user types a query and Google generates a collapsible AI answer at the top of the search results page, the pages cited as sources in that answer generate impressions in the AI Overviews section of the report. This is the more established and higher-volume AI surface for most sites.
AI Mode impressions come from the dedicated AI Mode experience, where users explicitly choose to search through Google’s conversational AI interface rather than standard search. AI Mode is still rolling out in new markets through late 2026, so impression volumes here are lower for most sites but growing quickly. The distinction matters because the optimisation strategies for the two surfaces are not identical. AI Overviews tend to cite authoritative, factually precise content. AI Mode can surface more conversational content and synthesises from a broader range of sources.

Log into Google Search Console for your verified property. In the left navigation, under the Search results section, you should now see a Generative AI option alongside the existing Search, Discover, and News tabs. Clicking it opens the generative AI performance view with the same date range picker and filter options you are familiar with from the main performance report.
If you do not see the Generative AI option, verify that your Search Console property is fully verified and that you are looking at the correct property. The rollout was described as global for all websites as of August 31, 2026, but if you have a recently added property or a property with verification issues, the report may take additional time to appear.
One thing to note: the impression data in this report may look much larger or much smaller than your standard organic search impressions, and that is expected. AI Overviews can generate multiple impressions for a single page across many different queries, while some sites with strong organic traffic may have relatively low AI citation volumes if their content structure is not well-suited to being cited in generated responses.
What Metrics to Focus On
The most actionable metric in the generative AI report right now is AI Overviews impressions by page. This tells you which pieces of content on your site are being cited in AI-generated answers, which is the clearest signal of which pages are performing well in the post-traditional-SEO environment.
Pages with high AI Overviews impressions but low traditional organic impressions are particularly interesting. These pages may not rank highly in standard search but are being cited frequently in AI responses, which means they are performing well on the quality and specificity dimensions that AI systems favour. This pattern can reveal content you should invest in expanding and updating to maximise AI citation performance.
Conversely, pages with high organic impressions but very low AI Overviews impressions may be ranking well in traditional search but are not being pulled into AI responses. This could indicate that the content is too general, lacks specific factual claims, or is structured in a way that does not map well to how AI systems extract and cite information. These pages are candidates for content updates focused on specificity and direct answer formatting.
How to Act on the Data
The first thing to do is identify your top ten pages by AI Overviews impressions and understand what they have in common. Look at their structure, depth, specificity, and the type of queries they are being cited for. These patterns tell you what your site’s content does particularly well from an AI citation standpoint and should inform the brief for new content you create.
Second, identify the pages that are generating the highest organic traffic in traditional search but are absent from AI Overviews. These represent the clearest opportunity for improvement. Update them with more specific data points, direct answer paragraphs, and clear factual statements that AI systems can extract cleanly. According to the Google Search Central Blog documentation, well-structured content with clear question-answer formatting is more likely to be cited in AI Overviews.
Third, use the country breakdown to understand where your AI citation performance is strongest. If you are seeing strong AI Overviews impressions in some markets but not others, this can inform your localisation and content investment priorities. AI Mode, which is still rolling out geographically, will create additional impression volume over the remainder of 2026 as it reaches more markets.
At Incisive Growth, we incorporate Search Console AI report data into our SEO strategy work, using it alongside traditional ranking and click data to build a complete picture of how sites are performing across both traditional and AI search surfaces.
Known Limitations Right Now
The most significant limitation of the current report is that it shows impressions but not clicks. You can see how often your pages are being cited in AI responses, but you cannot directly measure how many users clicked through from those citations to your site. This is a meaningful gap because the relationship between AI Overview impressions and click-through behaviour is very different from traditional organic search.
Research has consistently shown that AI Overviews reduce click-through rates for many query types because the AI response satisfies the query without the user needing to visit a source. High impression volume in the AI report does not therefore translate directly to high traffic in the way that high traditional search impressions do. Use the AI report alongside your standard traffic data to understand the full picture rather than treating AI impressions as a direct traffic proxy.
The report also does not currently show which specific queries triggered your AI citations, though Google has indicated this data may be added in future report updates. Without query-level data, you cannot directly see which search intents your content is serving in AI Mode and AI Overviews, which limits how precisely you can optimise for specific query types.
What This Means for SEO
The arrival of generative AI impression data in Search Console marks a genuine shift in how SEO performance can be measured. For the first time, you have a first-party data source from Google that tells you directly how your content is performing in AI search, not just traditional organic search. That is valuable regardless of the current limitations.
The practical implication for SEO strategy is that AI citation performance needs to become a standard part of monthly reporting alongside traditional rankings and organic traffic. Sites that are gaining AI Overviews impression share are building visibility in the fastest-growing part of Google search. Sites that are losing traditional organic impressions without gaining AI Overviews impressions face a genuine audience decline that traditional ranking metrics alone will not show.
At Incisive Growth, we have been building SEO strategies around AI citation optimisation since the initial rollout and now have a clear framework for using the Search Console AI data to improve content performance across both traditional and AI search surfaces. If you have not yet reviewed this report for your site, it should be your first stop this week.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Google Search Console generative AI report?
It is a new performance report in Search Console that shows how often your pages are appearing as cited sources within Google’s AI-generated search experiences, including AI Overviews in standard search, AI Mode, and generative AI features in Google Discover. The report shows impressions broken down by page, country, and date, and rolled out to all websites globally on August 31, 2026.
Does the AI report in Search Console show clicks?
Not currently. The generative AI report shows impressions, meaning instances where your page was cited as a source in an AI-generated response, but does not yet include click-through data. This is a known limitation. Use the report alongside your standard organic traffic data rather than treating AI impressions as a direct traffic proxy, since AI Overviews often reduce click-through rates by answering queries without users needing to visit a source.
What is the difference between AI Overviews impressions and AI Mode impressions?
AI Overviews impressions come from Google’s AI-generated summaries that appear at the top of traditional search results pages. AI Mode impressions come from the dedicated AI Mode interface where users choose to search conversationally through Google’s AI. AI Overviews have broader reach currently as they appear in standard search; AI Mode is still expanding to new markets through late 2026.
How do I get more impressions in Google AI Overviews?
Content that earns AI Overviews citations tends to be factually specific, structured with clear direct answer paragraphs, authoritative on its topic, and updated regularly. Creating content that directly answers the questions your target audience asks, using precise data and clear claims rather than general statements, improves your likelihood of being cited. A well-structured FAQ section is also frequently pulled into AI Overviews.
Should I optimise my content differently for AI Overviews vs AI Mode?
Somewhat. AI Overviews tend to favour highly authoritative, factually precise content on specific topics. AI Mode can surface more conversational content and synthesises from a broader range of sources. Content that answers specific questions with clear factual statements performs well in both. For AI Mode specifically, natural language phrasing and conversational question-and-answer formatting improves citation likelihood.
What should I do if my pages have high organic impressions but low AI Overviews impressions?
This pattern suggests your content is ranking well in traditional search but is not being structured in a way that AI systems can easily extract and cite. Update those pages with more specific factual claims, direct answer paragraphs, clear headings that match specific query patterns, and a FAQ section. Specificity and clarity of factual content are the primary factors AI systems use when selecting what to cite.
